    Workshop in Moodle: a tool for peer critiquing

    This paper will begin with a brief discussion of the benefits of peer assessment and peer critiquing. In particular, it will examine how both can be beneficial in helping to introduce, and reinforce, valuable graduate attributes in students throughout their university careers. It will then examine the tools available at the University of Glasgow and evaluate them in terms of their strengths and weaknesses. In order to explain this in detail, a real life case study from a third year class in Nursing will be presented. The paper will conclude that, while there are obvious benefits to peer critiquing tools being used with a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), some modifications are necessary in order to make them more easily usable by staff and students

    When the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) begins operation at CERN in 2007 it will produce data in volumes never before seen. Physicists around the world will manage, distribute and analyse petabytes of this data using the middleware provided by the LHC Computing Grid. One of the critical factors in the smooth running of this system is the performance of the file catalogues which allow users to access their files with a logical filename without knowing their physical location. This paper presents a detailed study comparing the performance and respective merits and shortcomings of two of the main catalogues: the LCG File Catalogue and the gLite FiReMan catalogue

    Practical limitations in optical entanglement purification

    Entanglement purification protocols play an important role in the distribution of entangled systems, which is necessary for various quantum information processing applications. We consider the effects of photo-detector efficiency and bandwidth, channel loss and mode-mismatch on the operation of an optical entanglement purification protocol. We derive necessary detector and mode-matching requirements to facilitate practical operation of such a scheme, without having to resort to destructive coincidence type demonstrations.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Entangled Coherent State Qubits in an Ion Trap

    We show how entangled qubits can be encoded as entangled coherent states of two-dimensional centre-of-mass vibrational motion for two ions in an ion trap. The entangled qubit state is equivalent to the canonical Bell state, and we introduce a proposal for entanglement transfer from the two vibrational modes to the electronic states of the two ions in order for the Bell state to be detected by resonance fluorescence shelving methods.Comment: 4 pages, No figures, accepted to PRA, minor chang

    Factors affecting coping with bullying in adolescence

    Bullying in schools has become an increasingly recognised problem. Since Olweus (1978) there has been an increase in research dedicated to this area, highlighting the ways bullying can be defined and its impact on the psychological well being of children and adolescents. As not all young people who are bullied experience psychological consequences, research has also examined differences in coping with the experience. This aims of this study are to investigate different types of bullying that occur and whether the psychological impact of bullying is affected by the ways in which young people cope and the social support they perceive to have available to them. A self-report questionnaire survey was conducted using two samples (school and clinical) of young people aged 12-16 years (N=82). Results suggest that those who report being bullied use cognitive restructuring coping strategies less often than those who report not experiencing bullying but overall psychological well being between the two groups was comparable. Type of bullying did not affect perceived levels of social support o r the level of reporting bullying experiences to teachers. The implications of the findings are discussed

Lippincott argues that as mobile devices such as smartphones become ‘key information devices’ for our users, libraries will want to have a significant presence in offering content and services that are suitable for this medium. This article outlines the process of development and implementation of a mobile strategy at the University of Glasgow Library. What began as an investigation into a mobile interface to the library catalogue evolved into a comprehensive strategic review of how we deliver services now and in the future in this rapidly changing mobile environment
